Collaboration Topic: Web-based Education
People Interested: Kathy Benson,
Jason Best, John
Hawley, Dan Smith
Notes from the Worksheet:
There is a lot of information available on the Web. Some of the concerns raised
were:
- how do you know where the good stuff is? How do you rate sites without stepping
on toes?
- how do you share course material?
- how are students learning from the Web?
- much of the material is very slick, and presented in a "just-so"
manner. Students don't learn the process of discovery/ don't learn about interpretive
techniques.
- what about those who don't have the access? Are we leaving them behind?
The Ideas:
- there are certain authority sites, like NASA, AAS . It's a good idea to
associate with these sites for the exposure they get. Do they have/ Are they
willing to have/ a list of "good educational links" ? Would they
want something developed along the lines of a series of "process of discovery"
pages, for example?
- John Hawley has started to create undergraduate cosmology web resources.
Other attendees may wish to participate in the creation of the pages. [The
suggestion was made that if you wish to develop applets, give them as an assignment
to students. The results can be very useful. ] Those interested in using/
contributing to these pages should contact John.
