Kelly L. Orr
Senior Program Associate, Research Competitiveness Program
Prior to joining the Research Competitiveness Program, Kelly worked on an internship in the Archaeobiology Program at the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution as a visiting scientist from the Georgia Museum of Natural History. Kelly earned a Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of Georgia specializing in zooarchaeology, the study of non-human animal bones from archaeological sites. Her dissertation research focused on coastal subsistence adaptations at the Bayou St. John site, a Native American archaeological site attributed to the Weeden Island culture. Kelly has several years of experience working at the Zooarchaeology Laboratory at the Georgia Museum of Natural History, where she studied prehistoric Native American and colonial-era subsistence practices. To supplement her social science background with perspectives from the natural sciences, Kelly completed a Masters Certificate in Conservation Ecology and Sustainable Development through the Institute of Ecology at the University of Georgia. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology from the Pennsylvania State University, where she participated in a nine-week archaeological field school.
