Executive Workshop on Academic Strategic Planning as a Tool for Enhancing Research Competitiveness and Graduate Education

A Workshop Sponsored by the

Research Competitiveness Program

February 20, 2001
San Francisco, CA

There is a growing concern for measures of effectiveness and accountability for the allocation of resources in the pursuit of academic goals, often under the impulse of a concern for accountability by state legislatures. At the same time, new information technologies are providing new tools that can support planning. The primary purpose of the workshop was to provide current information on best practices and approaches to strategic planning for research and graduate education within the context of the academic strategic plan.

With support from the National Science Foundation Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research, the Research Competitiveness Program of the American Association for the Advancement of Science offered this one-day workshop for senior academic executives for academic affairs and research from universities in EPSCoR states and other emerging research institutions. The workshop was offered in conjunction with the AAAS Annual Meeting in San Francisco, CA.

Morning sessions presented information on the use of academic strategic planning to support the enhancement of research competitiveness and graduate education, and on best practices in academic strategic planning. Afternoon breakout sessions presented exemplary cases of the use of strategic planning and provided for sharing experiences and expertise among peer universities.
