January 14 update:

• FY 2002 appropriations are now complete. FY 2002 began on October 1; on January 10, President Bush signed the last three (out of 13) appropriations bills into law. For information on the FY 20003 budget proposal released February 4, please go to the FY 2003 R&D page.
• The AAAS summary analysis of final FY 2002 appropriations is now available (in PDF format). The complete AAAS wrap-up of FY 2002 appropriations, Congressional Action on R&D in the FY 2002 Budget, will be published in mid-January; the full text of the book is available online. Also available are four summary tables of FY 2002 appropriations and final FY 2002 funding tables for 10 major R&D funding agencies (PDF).
• The FY 2002 budgets of all the R&D funding agencies have been finalized. Final funding analyses (in PDF) are now available for the Department of Defense, the National Institutes of Health and other HHS agencies, the National Science Foundation, NASA, EPA, the Department of Energy, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Department of Commerce, the Department of Transportation, and Department of the Interior. The above analyses include emergency counter-terrorism R&D appropriated to most of these agencies as part of the final Defense bill.
  
• The total funding level for FY 2002 appropriations is $686 billion (not including attack-related emergency funding), far more than the original $661 billion Bush request from April. In addition, Congress and the President have agreed on $40 billion in additional emergency funds for war, terrorism, and relief-related costs. Total counter-terrorism R&D in FY 2002 is $1.5 billion. A full analysis of counter-terrorism R&D is now available. Also available is an analyis providing details of R&D earmarks in FY 2002 appropriations, totaling $1.5 billion.
