The programs in the Federal Science and Technology Budget do not correspond to definitions of R&D. The FS&T Budget contains selected R&D and non-R&D programs with an emphasis on basic and applied research and the creation of new knowledge or technologies. The programs in this table were selected by OMB, and differ from the original definitions of FS&T proposed by the National Academy of Sciences.
