Background
The University of Colorado at Boulder is one of the nation's leaders in environmental research. CU Boulder provides a fertile environment for gaining interdisciplinary research experience. Much of this research involves collaboration amongst and between disciplines. Organizations include the Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research (INSTAAR), the Center for Science and Technology Policy Research within the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES), and the Institute of Behavioral Science (IBS).
The ENVS graduate program’s secondary core specialization in policy sciences builds upon more than two decades of experience in graduate policy education at CU-Boulder. The curriculum provides students with training that is problem oriented, contextual and drawn from a diversity of methodologies.
The term "Policy Sciences" was coined by Harold D. Lasswell. In collaboration with many colleagues, in particular Myres S. McDougal, he developed an integrative approach to solving problems and making decisions. The policy sciences approach to the study of decision making is the oldest tradition of the policy movement in academia that has led to a proliferation of graduate programs in policy. The policy sciences take a distinctive approach that is problem oriented, context sensitive and draws upon a diversity of methodologies. As such the policy sciences are inherently interdisciplinary and focused on the practical needs of decision makers.
Degrees Offered:
Master of Science
Doctor of Philosophy
Certificate in Environment, Policy and Society
Admissions Requirements:
Requirements for admission to the MS and PhD programs in the Environmental Studies Program include an undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0 and completion of the general GRE test. International students must take the TOEFL test. The GRE test is required with a recommended minimum score of 50% or above.
The above scores are meant to be illustrative and are not to be understood as minimum qualifications since there is considerable variation in scores. Letters of recommendation and student statements of interest are important considerations in the admission process.
Students must be admitted to the Environment, Policy and Society Certificate Program, but the only admission requirement is to be a student in good standing in a graduate program at the University of Colorado at Boulder or to hold a higher degree from an accredited university. To be admitted, CU graduate students must complete an application and signed by your departmental representative. Non-CU students must first complete an Application for Graduate Admissions and provide transcripts from their graduate institution and three letters of recommendation. Once these documents are reviewed, if an applicant is admitted into the program they must also complete the Certificate Application.
Some alternatives to the Environmental Studies Graduate Program at the University of Colorado at Boulder include:
