AAAS Scientific Freedom, Responsibility and Law

Staff

Mark S. Frankel, Ph.D., directs the Scientific Freedom, Responsibility and Law Program and is responsible for developing and managing AAAS activities related to science, ethics and law. He serves as Staff Officer to two AAAS committees--the Committee on Scientific Freedom and Responsibility and the AAAS-American Bar Association National Conference of Lawyers and Scientists. Deborah Runkle is a Senior Program Associate and the Associate Staff Director of the National Conference of Lawyers and Scientists. Her areas of interest are issues related to science and law and science and society. She is the Program Manager of Court Appointed Scientific Experts. email: drunkle@aaas.org

Nicole Carlozo is the Program Assistant for the Scientific Freedom, Responsibility and Law Program. She is interested in research and communications at the science-policy interface, specifically in the area of environmental science and conservation. Nicole graduated in 2008 from St. Mary's College of Maryland with a BA in Biology and English. She comes to AAAS from internships at The Wilderness Society and the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center. email: ncarlozo@aaas.org

Interns

Katie Alijewicz is a recent graduate of Tufts University with a B.S. in biological sciences. She spent a semester abroad in Denmark where she studied Biotechnology and Drug Development and became familiar with the ethical issues currently facing the medical and pharmaceutical communities.  Katie is primarily interested in the interaction between science, social issues and policy, in particular the dissemination of scientific knowledge to affect social change. email: kalijewi@aaas.org

Anna Ing is a recent graduate of the University of North Carolina Wilmington with a B.A. in psychology.  Anna is interested in the effects of the integration of science and policy, with a focus on mental health and addiction research and application as they are involved in, and affected by, policymaking.  email: aing@aaas.org
