The Professional Society Ethics Group (PSEG) was sponsored by the Scientific
Freedom, Responsibility and Law Program of the American Association for the
Advancement of Science. PSEG included almost seventy participants, representing
professional societies, academic institutions and government agencies.
The primary function of PSEG was to serve as a forum for the inter-professional
exchange of information and ideas relating to professional ethics. The group
convened meetings in Washington, DC, to discuss issues that cut across the professions
and ways by which individual professional societies have responded to ethical
concerns. Guest speakers were invited to explore with the group matters of particular
interest.
Topics featured at past meetings have included: “Honor in Science;” “Whistleblowing
and the Role of Professional Societies;” “The Federal Trade Commission's View
of Professional Codes of Ethics;” “Ethics and Animal Research;” “Ethical Responsibilities
of Journal Editors;” “Ethics and Decision-Making at NASA;” “Science, Engineering
and the Media;” “Problems and Opportunities in Professional Regulation;” “Conflict
of Interest in Research;” “Misconduct in Science;” “Science and Technology Policy
in the Clinton Administration;” “Recent Developments in Human Reproduction Research
and Technology;” “HHS Commission on Research Integrity;” “New PHS and NSF Conflict
of Interest Rules;” “New Intellectual Property Regimes for Databases: Implications
for Scientific Research and Communication;” and the most recent meeting was
on the “Institutional Review Boards and Human Subject Protection.”
PSEG was a co-publisher of the Professional
Ethics Report, a quarterly newsletter that reports on news and events, programs
and activities, and resources, and includes commentary and analysis of ethical
issues in research and practice.
