- Neuroscience and the
Law A two-day invitational workshop on September 12-13, 2003, in
Washington, DC, co-sponsored by AAAS and the Dana Foundation, examined
challenges to the legal system posed by advances in neuroscience research
and technology. Issues related to competency, "free will,"
justice, culpability and responsibility in the context of violent and
addictive behaviors, privacy, informed consent, to cite a few, where
the core of discussions among a group of federal and state judges, researchers,
and legal scholars/practitioners. The meeting was organized around four
commissioned papers--two by researchers in neuroscience and two by legal
scholars. Two reports will be published in early 2004, one aimed at
scholars, practitioners, policy makers and the other at the lay public.
