CONFERENCE DESCRIPTION
  This conference will examine the role of the scientific societies in influencing the ethical climate for research. Questions such as the following will be addressed:
   
 
What are the responsibilities of scientific societies to foster responsible research practices?
In what concrete ways do the scientific societies promote research integrity?
How are these policies and practices implemented and with what effect?
What measures and methods are used to determine their effectiveness?
What options beyond those now undertaken should societies consider adding to their current portfolios?
   
   
  Presenters will include professional society staff, officers, and members, legal counsel, ethicists, and social scientists, who will share their experences and research findings in an effort to document what works, what doesn’t, how we know, and to develop a research and action agenda.

  Officers and members of the scientific societies, ethicists, attorneys, and policy makers.
 
LOCATION AND ACCOMMODATIONS
  The conference is being held at the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Washington, DC. AAAS is located at 1200 New York Avenue, NW, Washington, DC 20005. A block of rooms at the Marriot Courtyard, Convention Center has been pre-reserved for conference attendees at a special rate of $139.00 per night. As there are a limited number of rooms, we advise that you book your rooms as early as possible. SOCIETIES SURVEY
  A session of the conference will be devoted to the outcomes of a survey of scientific societies and their acitvities in promoting research integrity.
