NEUROSCIENCE AND THE LAW
2003 Invitational Workshop
Lawyers, judges, legal scholars, philosophers, psychologists, psychiatrists, and neuroscientists gathered in September 2003 to discuss the emerging relationship between neuroscience and law. The invitational workshop added to the larger public discourse by distinguishing main concerns and future aims. Topics included monitoring and imaging the brain, brain modification, and what advances in neuroscience might mean for the legal system. Two publications were generated as result of the workshop, Neuroscience and the Law: Brain, Mind, and the Scales of Justice, Summary Report; and a book entitled, Neuroscience and the Law: Brain, Mind, and the Scales of Justice. Judicial Seminars on Emerging Issues in Neuroscience
AAAS and its collaborators have convened seminars to inform judges of the issues they may encounter in light of new developments in neuroscience. Selected federal and state judges have heard leading neuroscientists reflect on such topics as the neuroscience of moral decision, violence and the brain, memory and lie detection, and states of consciousness. Along with the Dana Foundation, the National Center for State Courts, and the Federal Judicial Center, AAAS hosted two seminars in June and December of 2006. On November 2007 a third seminar took place in Reno, NV in collaboration with the National Judicial College (click below for more details). The next seminar will take place on May 6-7, 2008 in Chicago, Illinois.
