Speaker: The Honorable Steve Maharey, New Zealand Minister of
Research, Science and Technology Wednesday, October
31, 2007 (Click

Minister Maharey's talk, entitled, "First to See the Light - Science,
Society and Sustainability in New Zealand," he will outline the vision
the New Zealand Government has for sustainability. This vision is for New Zealand
to be the first truly sustainable nation, and to aspire to be carbon neutral in
the economy and as a way of life. New Zealand's unique geography and culture leave
it well positioned to implement this vision. Mr Maharey will also describe some
of the science being conducted in New Zealand that will support the vision, and
emphasize the importance of international collaboration, particularly with its
most important bilateral research and technology partner, the United States.
Steve Maharey has been New Zealand's Labour Member of Parliament for Palmerston
North since 1990. In addition to serving as Minister of Research, Science &
Technology, he is Minister of Education, Minister of Broadcasting, Minister for
Crown Research Institutes and Minister responsible for the Education Review Office.
He holds a B.A. and M.A. (Hons) in sociology and was a senior lecturer in sociology
at Massey University before entering Parliament. He has published widely in his
areas of interest - media and cultural studies and social change.
