AAAS established an Office of International Science in 1973, with Irene Tinker, an expert on women and development issues, as director. The Cultural Factors in Population Programs, which received funding from U.S. Agency for International Development, was among the first activities of the new office. The project included an Advisory Committee, chaired by anthropologist Ward Goodenough, and interviewed experts in population, cultural change, and comparative development for a background paper given to delegations at the 1974 World Population Conference. The project formally ended in 1977, but other OIS activities on women, reproduction, and economics in developing countries arose from it.
