Overview of the Collection

Repository:    American Association for the Advancement of Science Archives, 1200 New York Avenue, NW, Washington, DC 20005, archives@aaas.org
Creator:    AAAS Commission on Science Education
Title:    AAAS Science: A Process Approach Records
Dates:    1963-1983
Extent:    37.5 linear feet (30 boxes)
Abstract:    This collection contains the records of Science: A Process Approach (SAPA) a curriculum project developed by the AAAS Commission on Science Education in response to the post-Sputnik crisis in science education. Science: A Process Approach included a kit of materials for children from kindergarten through sixth grade. The program was funded by NSF and published commercially by the Xerox Corporation. Despite evidence that SAPA was more effective than traditional teaching methods, the program never achieved the market penetration that had been hoped.
Identification:
Language:    The records are in English.

Scope and Contents

Records include publications (bound volumes, classroom materials, curriculum guides, booklets, pamphlets), slides, film, correspondence, photographs, curricula drafts, and miscellaneous office documents.

Arrangement

Records are arranged in the following five series. Series I: Publications, Slides, and Film, 1963-1975; Series II: Curricula, 1972-1973; Series III: SAPA and Xerox Corporation, 1962-1976; Series IV: Feedback, 1964-1968; and Series V: Miscellaneous, 1965-1983. Please note that Series I was reorganized in 2010 and boxes 1, 9 and 10 of duplicate material were removed without renumbering the remaining boxes.
