AAAS entered the field of science education in 1955 upon receiving a $300,000 grant from the Carnegie Corporation of New York. The association hired John Mayor, a University of Wisconsin mathematician, to develop programs, projects, conferences and workshops. One of Mayor's early initiatives, the Science Teacher Improvement Program, assisted other organizations to strengthen the qualifications of science teachers and reform teaching materials, as well as increase student interest and understanding in science. Records include correspondence, reports, and other documentation.
