Jianguo Wu

Jianguo Wu is honored for pioneering efforts and outstanding contributions to international initiatives in support of sustainability science, specifically his conceptual modeling activities, commitment to landscape ecological research, and mentoring of young scholars.

Established in 1992, the AAAS Award for International Scientific Cooperation recognizes an individual or a limited number of individuals for making extraordinary contributions to further international cooperation in science and engineering. The recipients each receive a commemorative plaque and a share of the $5,000 award.

Jianguo (Jingle) Wu is a professor of ecology and sustainability science in the School of Life Sciences and the Global Institute of Sustainability at Arizona State University (ASU), Tempe. He received a B.S. degree in biology from Inner Mongolia University in 1981, and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in ecology from Miami University of Ohio in 1987 and 1991, respectively. Between 1991 and1993, he was a National Science Foundation postdoctoral fellow at Cornell University and Princeton University.

Dr. Wu’s research areas include landscape ecology, urban ecology, biodiversity and ecosystem functioning, and sustainability science. He is the author of more than 130 scientific papers, including five books. He has been program chair of the U.S. Association of Landscape Ecology (US-IALE), councilor-at-large of US-IALE, and chair of the Asian Ecology Section of the Ecological Society of America.

Dr. Wu is the editor-in-chief of the international journal, Landscape Ecology, and serves on the editorial boards of several professional journals, including Journal of Integrative Plant BiologyLandscape and Ecological EngineeringActa Ecologica SinicaChinese Journal of Plant EcologyChinese Journal of Ecology, and Biodiversity Science. He is an advisor to the President’s Office on China Affairs at ASU, and is a guest or specially appointed professor at Beijing University, Beijing Normal University, Chinese Academy of Sciences Graduate School, East China Normal University, Inner Mongolia University, Inner Mongolia Agricultural University, Institute of Botany of Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Zhejiang University.
