Alice M. Agogino

Professor Alice M. Agogino exemplifies the ideals of the AAAS Mentor Award for Lifetime Achievement. An internationally renowned scholar, she is best known for her interdisciplinary research in human-centered design, her contributions to engineering education, and her impact in broadening participation within the field of engineering.

Professor Agogino has had a significant impact on undergraduate engineering education and has made extensive contributions to K-12 science and technology education, gender equity, and STEM educational digital libraries. Through her mentoring and other interactions, she has inspired a large number of students and junior faculty members to include the scholarship of teaching as part of their research portfolio. She has also personally mentored 32 doctoral students (including five African-Americans, one Hispanic, and 15 women); 82 graduate-level students (including seven African-Americans, seven Hispanic, and 25 women); and an estimated 800 undergraduate researchers during her career.

Professor Agogino currently serves as the Roscoe and Elizabeth Hughes Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of California at Berkeley. She is well-recognized for her disciplinary research in areas like intelligent learning systems, information retrieval and data mining, and multimedia and computer-aided design, among many others, as well as her work on gender equity and the scholarship of teaching. She has been celebrated internationally for her extensive contributions to the field of engineering, receiving numerous awards for her research as well as her education and mentoring practices. These include four best paper awards on her disciplinary research and four best paper awards for her work in engineering education. She has published more than 200 peer-reviewed papers and co-authored 12 courseware modules with her graduate students.

Dr. Agogino is a member of the prestigious National Academy of Engineering and a Fellow of several highly respected scientific societies, including AAAS, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and the Association for Women in Science.

The AAAS Mentor Award for Lifetime Achievement, established in 1991, honors AAAS members who have mentored significant numbers of students from underrepresented groups or who have changed the climate of a department, college, institution or field to significantly increase the diversity of students pursuing and completing doctoral studies in the sciences. This award is directed toward individuals with more than 25 years of success in mentoring students. The recipient receives $5,000 and a commemorative plaque.
