John B. Goodenough, an elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, was awarded the 2019 Nobel Prize in Chemistry along with M. Stanley Whittingham and Akira Yoshino for their work in developing the lithium-ion battery.

Governments must continue robust funding for basic research if they are to reap the economic benefits of science and technology innovation, AAAS CEO Alan I. Leshner writes in a 27 September op-ed in the German newspaper Die Zeit.

In recognition of this reality, European Union nations from Germany to Denmark are “increasing their science investments even as they control their budgets,” said Leshner, who is also the executive publisher of the journal Science.

At a time when some public officials are quick to mock quirky-sounding science, the new Golden Goose Awards honor the basic research that is essential to innovation, U.S. Representative Jim Cooper and AAAS CEO Alan I. Leshner say in a Washington Post commentary.
