AAAS Colloquium: Video Science Journalism

10 Jul 2018
4:00 pm to 5:00 pm
AAAS Headquarters

The AAAS Kavli Science Journalism Awards program welcomes Nsikan Akpan, digital science producer for the PBS NewsHour, for a presentation of his award-winning work and a discussion of video science journalism.

Tuesday, July 10
4:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Light refreshments to follow

Akpan and colleague Matthew Ehrichs won a 2016 AAAS Kavli Science Journalism Award for a short video feature on “What a smell looks like.”

We will show that feature and several others Akpan has produced for the NewsHour as co-creator of the digital series ScienceScope:

  • Can a solar smart grid prevent future energy disasters in Puerto Rico?
  • What is the high-tech coating that makes ketchup, toothpaste and glue slide out of their containers?
  • Do redheads, in fact, feel more pain?

Akpan and Earl Lane, executive director of the AAAS Kavli Science Journalism Awards program, will discuss the videos, how Akpan got into science coverage, how he finds some of his off-beat stories, and how science coverage is organized at the PBS NewsHour.

The event will also be livestreamed at https://livestream.com/aaasorg.
