Last November, the Association of American Universities organized a delegation tour of Iran for the presidents of six leading U.S. universities as part of an effort to identify potential ways for enhancing scientific and educational links between the United States and Iran . This is the latest in a series of exchange visits involving senior academics and scientists. Their visit comes at a time when U.S. policy towards Iran is undergoing a comprehensive review as part of the preparations for the incoming Obama administration. This conversation will provide a readout of the University Presidents' visit and offer some insight into potential areas where science and education cooperation might provide one approach for increasing engagement between the two countries. It will also review events, including the recent detention of a member of a US National Academy of Sciences' delegation, that have the potential to impact future scientific collaborations.
