Director, AAAS S&T Policy Fellowship Program

ynthia Robinson directs the AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellowships®, administering programs and activities for more than 250 fellows annually in the executive, judicial and legislative branches of government. With a team of 20 full-time staff and an annual budget of more than $16 million, she oversees strategic planning and policy; program development and evaluation; professional education activities; and communications, marketing, and stakeholder relations. Current Fellow Nishal Mohan
2013-15 Executive Branch Fellow, National Science Foundation

Nishal Mohan is a molecular biologist with a background in microbiology. Following his Ph.D. at Princeton University, he joined the Federation of American Scientists and created a Biosecurity Program with a focus on biological weapons control, training and preparedness for WMD attacks, and the responsible use of science and technology. Mohan is also the founder and former Executive Director of the Virtual Biosecurity Center, the first international multi-organizational biosecurity center in the world. He then went on to create Pandemic Academic LLC, a company with a focus on creating emerging technology solutions to global infectious diseases problems. Mohan is currently a AAAS Science & Technology Fellow in the Office of the Assistant Director, Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering at the National Science Foundation. His projects include Big Data, Health IT and the US Ignite initiative to foster the creation of next-generation applications that provide transformative public benefit.

Alumnus Fellow Avenel Joseph
2009-10 Congressional Fellow, Office of Senator Edward Markey (D-MA)

Avenel Joseph is Senior Policy Advisor for Health and Environment to Senator Edward J. Markey. She started on the hill in 2009 as an American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Congressional Fellow sponsored by the Federation of Animal Science Societies (FASS) with a placement in the office of then Representative Markey working on issues related to public health and the environment. After her fellowship year, she was hired to serve on the Natural Resources Committee oversight and investigations team under Ranking Member Markey, where she investigated issues related to the impacts of energy development on worker safety, public health and the environment.  In June 2013,   Edward Markey won the special Senate election to fill the seat vacated by John Kerry and Dr. Joseph transitioned to the Senate to serve as his Senior Policy Advisor with responsibility for oversight and legislative issues related to public  health, health care and the environment.
