AAAS serves on the steering and organizing committees for the World Science Forum and is sending a delegation led by AAAS CEO and Executive Publisher of the Science family of journals, Sudip Parikh to the 2022 World Science Forum in Cape Town, South Africa from December 5 - 9. The theme of the forum is “Science for Social Justice.” AAAS is co-organizing two sessions, "Open Science and a Just, Equitable Scientific Enterprise: Promises and Pitfalls" and "Global Scientific Research as a Tool to Unlock Talent and Expand the Geographical Confines of Knowledge Creation." It will also host a side event, "A Global Approach to Ending Sexual Harassment in STEM."
This is the first time that the WSF is hosted in Africa. The Forum was launched in 2003 in Budapest, Hungary, where it was hosted every two years. Since 2011, the format changed to make it truly global: the Forum is hosted every second occasion in a partner country. In addition to Hungary, the WSF has also been organized in Brazil (2013) and Jordan (2017).
