Event | A Peace of Science: Diplomacy with North Korea

Documentary Screening

On July 21, 2021, AAAS hosted a virtual screening of, “A Peace of Science: Diplomacy with North Korea,” a short documentary highlighting science diplomacy efforts with North Korea. The documentary, produced by the Global Co Lab Network focuses on how science can build bridges between societies where official relationships are strained.

Dr. Sudip Parikh, the CEO of AAAS and executive publisher of the Science family of journals opened the screening by saying that "AAAS was proud to be involved with this important work as a member of the U.S.-DPRK Scientific Engagement Consortium, leading delegations to North Korea, and supporting American and British scientists working on the Mount Paektu research project."

After the screening, organizers showed a short video of Dr. Norman Neureiter, first Science and Technology Adviser to the Secretary of State and senior advisor to the AAAS Center for Science Diplomacy discussing science diplomacy efforts with North Korea.

Dr. Kim Montgomery, director of International Affairs and Science Diplomacy at AAAS moderated a brief Q&A with interviewees from the documentary: Dr. Peter Agre, Nobel Prize Laureate, Johns Hopkins Malaria Research Institute, past President of AAAS; Dr. James Hammond, Mt. Paektu Research Centre, University of London; Ms. Linda Staheli, the Founding Director of Global Co Lab Network; and Mr. Richard Stone, Senior Science Editor of HHMI Tangled Bank Studios.
