SciEngage (November 2021)

SciEngage (November 2021)

Over the past year, the SciEngage steering committee dedicated time to deep reflection on our own practices, experiences and approaches, as well as what is happening in the world around us, with the intention to better understand how this platform can be a valuable resource for meaningful community engagement. We have done alignment work within the steering committee, held a small group discussion and engaged in multiple one-on-one conversations to gather feedback. We then modeled our new approach during a session at the 2021 Inclusive SciComm Symposium (ISCS) last month. Now, we are excited to invite you and all of your intersections to inform and build on conversations that can lead to meaningful action!

In line with our new approach, the topic for our first conversation came from our community. During our session at the ISCS, we posed the question, “What conversations are missing, and what's not happening in your field and in your worlds that needs to be?” The primary conversation that emerged was about power dynamics.

We invite you, and those who you believe have a community-centered perspective to share, to join us on Friday November 19 at 12 PM ET for an exploration and interrogation about power. We hope that you can bring the questions you’re grappling with and the realities you’ve been navigating. In the meantime, we invite you to reflect on the power dynamics that impact your  professional and personal life, what power looks and feels like in the spaces you occupy, how power can be leveraged to affect positive change, and how we as a community can do better.

The SciEngage community is meant to be a safe space, free from retaliation and judgement. Our approach aims to go beyond the introductory level and present an opportunity for all perspectives to join. We hope to see you there!
