The 2017 AAAS Fellows will be recognized at the 2018 AAAS Annual Meeting in Austin, Texas, where they will be presented a rosette pin with its gold and blue colors to signify science and engineering, respectively. | AAAS

American Association for the Advancement of Science has awarded the distinction of Fellow to 396 of its members for 2017 in recognition of their contributions to science and technology, scientific leadership and extraordinary achievements across disciplines.

The Council, which is AAAS’ policymaking body, elected the members as AAAS Fellows in October. The new AAAS Fellows will be recognized on Saturday, Feb. 17, 2018 during the Fellows Forum at the 2018 AAAS Annual Meeting in Austin, Texas.

At the forum, the new Fellows will be presented with an official certificate and a unique rosette pin, the emblem of Fellowship. The gold and blue colors of the AAAS Fellows’ rosette signify science and engineering, respectively.

The tradition of AAAS Fellows dates to 1874 and comprises an illustrious group of scientists. Among them are astronomer Maria Mitchell, who discovered a comet that now carries her name and was elected Fellow in 1875; inventor Thomas Edison, whose creations included the incandescent light bulb and was elected Fellow in 1878; anthropologist Margaret Mead whose field research on culture and personality attracted much acclaim and was elected Fellow in 1934, and American biologist James Watson who, along with others, helped discover the structure of DNA and was elected Fellow in 1965.

Earlier this year, five of the 2017 Nobel laureates were AAAS Fellows, one Fellow each for the 2017 Nobel Prize for physiology or medicine and the 2017 Nobel Prize in chemistry; and three Fellows for the 2017 Nobel Prize in physics

Currently, AAAS members can be considered for the rank of Fellow if nominated by the steering groups of the AAAS’s 24 sections, or by any three Fellows who are current AAAS members so long as two of the three sponsors are not affiliated with the nominee’s institution or nominated by the AAAS chief executive officer. Fellows must have been continuous members of AAAS for four years by the end of the calendar year in which they are elected.

Each steering group reviews the nominations of individuals within its respective section and a final list is forwarded to the AAAS Council, which votes on the aggregate list.

The AAAS president leads the group that is made up of members of the AAAS board of directors, retiring section chairs, delegates from each electorate and each regional division as well as two delegates from the National Association of Academies of Science.

The 2017 AAAS Fellows also will be announced in the AAAS News & Notes section of the November 24, 2017 issue of Science.

Nominations for the 2018 Nomination Cycle will begin on December 1, 2017 and conclude on April 11, 2018.
