Amid a catastrophic public health crisis, extreme weather events and longstanding systemic inequity and racism, 2020 brought an unparalleled need for scientific expertise, collaboration, communication and leadership, said Sudip Parikh, AAAS chief executive officer and executive publisher of the Science family of journals, in introducing the 2020 AAAS Annual Report, released today.
Throughout 2020, AAAS rose to meet those challenges while fulfilling its mission of advancing science, engineering and innovation throughout the world for the benefit of all people. AAAS and the Science family of journals mobilized to disseminate COVID-19 research among the scientific community and among policy leaders working to protect the public throughout the pandemic. AAAS also committed to combating systemic racism and inequity in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine, beginning by evaluating with AAAS and Science authors, reviewers, award winners, program participants and fellows to gather baseline data for ongoing efforts in service of diversity, equity and inclusion.
