AAAS applauds Senate Majority Leader Schumer (D-NY) and Senator Young (R-IN) for their hard work and bipartisan leadership in shepherding to Senate passage one of the most important pieces of science and technology legislation in a generation.
This CHIPS and Science legislation strengthens our nation’s commitment to science and technology by incentivizing investment in the U.S. semiconductor industry, advancing American innovation, and bolstering our leadership on the global stage.
We are thrilled the Senate-passed bill includes important provisions such as a robust reauthorization of the National Science Foundation; taking the first steps toward a National Science & Technology Strategy; creating regional technology hubs; supporting R&D in the Departments of Commerce and Energy, National Aeronautics and Space Administration and National Institute of Standards and Technology; committing to STEM education and a broad, inclusive workforce; and supporting a balanced approach to research security.
Investments in science are a down payment on our future. This legislation will help us propel discovery, build on our strengths, and show yet again what American investment, intellect, ingenuity, and risk-taking can accomplish for the benefit of all. We urge the House of Representatives to move swiftly to finalize passage of this bill.
