On May 1, House Energy and Commerce Chairman Fred Upton (R-MI) and Rep. Diana DeGette (D-CO) announced the launch of a new initiative called 21st Century Cures focused on government interventions that could streamline the process from scientific discovery to drug and device development to delivery to patients. The Committee will release a series of white papers, and gather advice as to how Congress can facilitate rapid discovery and development of new cures. “If we want to save more lives and keep this country the leader in medical innovation, we have to make sure there’s not a major gap between the science of cures and the way we regulate these therapies,” they said in a statement. The group has posted a launch video and white paper and has scheduled a roundtable event for May 6.
