The American Society for Microbiology (ASM) has named eight AAAS members 2011 laureates. The awards are dedicated to acknowledging the best in microbiology. They are administered by the American Academy of Microbiology and encompass the many subspecialties of microbiology, including biotechnology, clinical microbiology, environmental microbiology, antimicrobial chemotherapy, immunology, and virology, as well as education and service to the profession.
The eight 2011 ASM Award laureates are:
- Jonathan Beckwith, Ph.D., 2011 ASM Graduate Microbiology Teaching Award
- Leah E. Cowen, Ph.D., 2011 Merck Irving S. Sigal Memorial Award
- Agnes A. Day, Ph.D., 2011 William A. Hinton Research Training Award
- Susan Forsburg, Ph.D., 2011 Roche Diagnostics Alice C. Evans Award
- Susan Gottesman, Ph.D., 2011 Abbott-ASM Lifetime Achievement Award
- Jo Handelsman, Ph.D., 2011 D.C. White Research and Mentoring Award
- Albert Z. Kapikian, M.D., 2011 Maurice Hilleman/Merck Award
- Joseph E. McDade, Ph.D., 2011 Gen-Probe Joseph Public Health Award
