AAAS members have elected 401 AAAS Fellows for 2014, honoring them for their contributions to innovation, education, and scientific leadership.
The accomplishments of the new Fellows will be celebrated at the 2015 AAAS Annual Meeting, convening this year under the theme "Innovations, Information, and Imaging." At the Annual Meeting, the new Fellows will be presented with an official certificate and a gold and blue (representing science and engineering, respectively) rosette pin on Saturday, 14 February from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at the AAAS Fellows Forum in San Jose, California.
When notified of their election, several of the new Fellows reflected on the honor bestowed on them by their peers. David Voorhees, associate professor of earth science and geology at Waubonsee Community College was elected "for a leading role in creating a national organization for geoscience faculty at two-year colleges and contributions to improving teaching and learning at two year colleges," according to his official citation. Having actively participated in an organization for geoscience teachers at two-year colleges in Illinois, Voorhees contributed to the formation and served as the first president of Geo2YC, a national association for geoscience teachers at two-year colleges.
"I was quite humbled and honored to even be nominated to be a AAAS fellow, as the formation of Geo2YC has truly been a synergistic effort with many of my talented and energetic 2YC colleagues from around the country," Voorhees said. "The success of Geo2YC is as much from their effort as mine."
Francine Berman, a professor in the computer science department at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, was elected a AAAS Fellow "for distinguished contributions to the field of computer science and community leadership in data cyber-infrastructure, digital data preservation, and high performance computing."
A former chair of the AAAS section representing Information, Computing, and Communication, Berman was delighted to learn that she has been elected a AAAS Fellow. "In an era where public access, big data, and data science are emerging as national and international priorities, AAAS can do much to advance issues of critical importance to the research community," Berman said.
"I feel greatly honored to be associated with AAAS," said Ge Wang, the Clark and Crossan Endowed Chair Professor and Biomedical Imaging Cluster director in the biomedical engineering department at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Wang was elected a AAAS Fellow "for distinguished contributions to the field of biomedical imaging, particularly for x-ray computed tomography, optical molecular tomography, interior tomography, and multi-modality fusion."
"My middle school son and I read Science regularly, and I look forward to attending the San Jose meeting, making new friends, and getting more involved," Wang said.
Eric Mjolsness, a professor in the computer science department at University of California-Irvine, was elected a AAAS Fellow "for distinguished contributions to the fields of computer science and biology, particularly for new computational models of gene regulation and resulting technologies and visualizations."
Mjolsness was very excited to learn that he was a new AAAS Fellow because AAAS is one of his favorite organizations. "When I was an undergraduate, one of my physics professors got me interested in the magazine by saying that even though a lot of Science articles and papers are technical, he would guarantee that at least one or two per week would be really interesting to me," Mjolsness said. "That turned out to be true, with an increasing hit rate as time went by. To this day the magazine is a highpoint of my week."
The tradition of electing AAAS Fellows began in 1874 to recognize members for their scientifically or socially distinguished efforts to advance science or its applications. To be considered for the rank of AAAS Fellow, nominees must have been continuous AAAS members by the end of the calendar year in which they are elected. Fellows must be nominated by one of the steering groups of the Association's 24 sections; by any three Fellows who are current AAAS members (as long as two of the three sponsors are not affiliated with the nominee's institution); or by the AAAS chief executive officer.
Steering groups review the nominations of individuals within their respective sections and send a final list of nominees to the AAAS Council for a vote. As the policymaking body for AAAS, the Council is chaired by the AAAS president and consists of members of the board of directors, the retiring section chairs, delegates from each electorate and regional division, and two delegates from the National Association of Academies of Science.
