Yucca Mountain Passes Additional Regulatory Milestone

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has released volume three of its Yucca Mountain Safety Evaluation Report, which is one of a series of five NRC reports that will evaluate the safety of the proposed Department of Energy nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain, Nevada. Volume three evaluates the long term safety of the proposed site over the million plus years that the stored waste needs to be contained. The report concludes that the proposed site meets “limits for individual protection, human intrusion, and separate standards for protection of groundwater” for the required duration of storage. Volume three is the second to be released, after volume 1 (providing general information) was released in 2010.  The remaining three safety volumes are expected to be released by January 2015.
