About the STPF Fellows

The S&T Policy Fellows look like America.

Sudip Parikh

AAAS is committed to ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to contribute to, and benefit from, science and engineering, and to supporting efforts to diversify the science and technology workforce and amplify underrepresented and marginalized voices within STEM. Likewise, the AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellowships program works to ensure a fellowship body that reflects the full diversity of the larger society. Always striving for improvement, below are a few data points that paint a picture of the STPF fellows. (To learn more about what AAAS is doing to combat systemic racism in the sciences, click here.)

The data in the following charts represent all fellows who served at least one year between 2016-2020.

The first chart compares STPF data with data from the National Science Foundation Survey of Earned Doctorates, an annual census of all individuals receiving a research doctorate from an accredited U.S. institution in a given academic year: in this case 2019. Technical notes about the chart are at the bottom of the page.

Technical Notes for Racial Identification Chart:

  • STPF data was adjusted to conform with NSF categorizations. Fellows who identified as Hispanic or Latino, regardless of their race, were counted as Hispanic or Latino (and were not included in the count of racial groups to avoid double counting). Fellows who indicated that they are not Hispanic or Latino (N=772), Declined to Identify Ethnicity (N=30), or did  not provide an answer to the ethnicity question (N=13) were all included in the count of racial groups (total=815).

  • We used the NSF categories “Other race or race not reported” and “Ethnicity not reported”  to compare with the STPF category “Decline to identify."
