AAAS has offered GSK Science in the Summer™ (GSK SIS) in the DC metro area since 2012, partnering with community-based organizations serving children from backgrounds underrepresented in STEM. The following organizations will deliver GSK SIS in 2023 from late June to early August.
Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington (BGCGW) has been a GSK SIS partner since 2012. BGCGW serves kids and teens to ensure academic success, good character and citizenship, and healthy lifestyles. A new initiative focuses on climate change.
Caroline County Public Library, a long-time partner, serves families and children on the Eastern Shore. They will offer the program at the Federalsburg Library.
Clifton Park Baptist Church in Silver Spring, MD supports the surrounding community with a number of outreach projects, include Project Neighbor Care. GSK SIS will be part of their summer STEM camps.
DC Public Library has offered the program at libraries in every ward in the district each summer since 2012. The Lamond-Riggs, Mt. Pleasant, and Parklands-Turner libraries will participate in 2023.
Difference Makers at Takoma Park Middle School, a student service organization led by a GSK SIS teacher, will assemble the teaching/student kits. The program will be held at community organizations in Takoma Park, MD.
Gaithersburg Community Museum, a new partner, has indoor/outdoor interpretive spaces that provide hands-on learning centers for children that spark the imagination and exhibits that explore Gaithersburg's rich history.
Girls Inc. DC, a local affiliate of the national network, inspires all DC area girls to be strong, smart, and bold through direct service and advocacy opportunities. Girls Inc. DC serves middle school girls, with an emphasis on DC Wards 1, 5, 7 and 8.
Laurel Historical Society, a partner since 2012, works to preserve the cultural and historical heritage of greater Laurel and also serves its children by providing a range of summer activities for children, including GSK SIS.
RESET, a STEM-focused educational nonprofit operating in the DC metro area since 1988, recruits volunteers who bring hands-on science lessons, interactive experiments, and field trips to underserved populations in formal and informal settings.
St. Thomas More Catholic Academy, a pre-K-8 school in Southeast DC, will offer GSK SISTM for area children. The principal has been a GSK SIS teacher since 2012.
