Reports from CAIP Affiliates: American Institute of Chemical Engineers

Report to the AAAS Consortium of Affiliates for International Programs(CAIP)

The general goals of AIChE are to serve the chemical engineering profession, support chemical engineers, and to benefit society. International activities of AIChE are coordinated through an International Committee which reports to the Board of Directors. In addition, several of AIChE’s activities, including the Center for Chemical Process Safety (CCPS) and the Society for Biological Engineers (SBE) are constituted with an international mission and charter.

The profession of chemical engineering and the careers of chemical engineers are becoming increasingly international, while significant societal issues such as climate change and energy, biotech, sustainability, and process safety require broad international attention. These trends are driving AIChE to take a global approach to its activities to catalyze chemical and biological engineering collaboration.

AIChE, its Center for Chemical Process Safety (CCPS), and its Society for Biological Engineering (SBE) are building international membership, establishing collaborations with relevant institutions, and hosting events around the world. Cooperative agreements have recently been established with societies and institutions in Argentina, India, Korea, and Taiwan.

Upcoming events include the CCPS 2008 Latin America Conference, May 27-29, Buenos Aires, Argentina, and the SBE International Conference on Bioengineering and Nanotechnology, July 22-24, Dublin, Ireland. Additional events are planned later this year in China and India.
