Reports from CAIP Affiliates: Geological Society of America
GSA is a worldwide scientific community whose mission is be a leader in advancing the geosciences, enhancing the professional growth of its members, and promoting the geosciences in the service of humankind. GSA’s goals are: 1) increase the quality and vitality of meetings and conferences; 2) increase the quality and vitality of publications; and 3) promote geoscience in the service of the society.
International activities include:
- GSA acting as a promotional partner with the Geological Society of Australia on the GSAus 17th Biannual Geological Convention, held in Hobart, Tasmania 8 – 13 February 2004. Several U.S. scientists organized sessions.
- Through the International Division, GSA cooperated with AAPG to offer sessions on Geology of the Russian Platform in Prague, in October 2004, as part of AAPG’s European Region meeting.
- Earth Systems Processes II, scheduled for 8 – 11 August 2005 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, is being co-convened with the partnership of the Geological Association of Canada. The European Geosciences Union (EGU) and the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIAR) are co-sponsoring. The meeting website is www.geosociety.org/esp2.
- Backbone of the Americas, a joint meeting with Asociaci’n Geol-gica Argentina, will be held 4 – 7 April 2006 in Mendoza, Argentina. Milestones, schedule, and budget will be developed.
International societies with consistent aims and a mission of advancing the geosciences or science can affiliate with GSA as an Allied Society in order to cooperate in various ways. GSA is affiliated with the Asociaci’n Geol-gica Argentina (AGA), Geological Association of Canada (GAC), Geological Society of Australia (GSAus), Geological Society of London (GSL), and Geological Society of South Africa (GSSA).
GSA elects up to three Honorary Fellows per year through a nomination process. Honorary Fellowship may be bestowed on individuals who have lived and developed their careers outside North America and have made outstanding and internationally recognized contributions to our science, or in rare circumstances, provided notable service to the Society.
