I am a PhD candidate in Interdisciplinary Ecology at the University of Florida. ‘Interdisciplinary’ describes my interests and experience well: I have done field research on native bee and flower communities in California (my dissertation topic), sea turtles and oysters in North Carolina, carnivorous beetles in the Rocky Mountains, pollinators in Israel, Canada Lynx in Colorado and kangaroo rats in the remote Arizona desert. When I’m not collecting, curating or analyzing data about ecosystems, I love exploring them by foot, bike or boat—from high Himalayan peaks through the red-rock trails of Utah to the murky mysteries of Florida waterways. Whatever the adventure, my steady companion (besides my dog) has been my compulsion to write. I’ve blogged about bees, rodents and travel, freelanced for New Scientist, NPR, the Gainesville Sun and Cycling Utah, and am a teaching assistant for the University of Florida’s Environmental Journalism course. I am excited to dive into the complex ecology of New Orleans this summer as a AAAS Fellow at the Times-Picayune (nola.com).
