Mary Koppal

Communications Director

Mary Koppal is the communications director for Project 2061 of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. She is responsible for the project's publishing and outreach programs.

Previously, Koppal was the publisher for the National Academy of Sciences’ Issues in Science and Technology, where she began her work as the associate publisher/circulation manager. From 1987 to 1994, she was responsible for the overall business and administrative operation of this award-winning national science and technology policy journal.

Koppal was the marketing director from 1981 to 1985 for the National Academy Press. The Press published 40 to 60 new titles each year, and had a backlist of 700 trade, scholarly, and professional titles in all areas of science, technology, health, and public policy.

In earlier positions, Koppal was a staff writer in the Communications/ Marketing Department of the Congressional Information Service, Inc., and a marketing specialist for the Printing and Publishing Office of the National Academy of Sciences.

She received a B.A. in English from the University of Maryland and pursued graduate studies in Communication in Contemporary Society at Johns Hopkins University.
