When you apply for a full-time position, you may or may not be called for an interview. If you are interviewed, it would likely be face-to-face, for an hour or even all day. When you apply for a summer internship, however, the employer may request a telephone interview.

Entry Point Guide to Making the Most of Your Internship

An internship is a wonderful way to “test drive” a career choice. It will give you an opportunity to use the skills you have and to learn new ones. It will help you determine if you need additional classes while giving you some practical experience in your field of interest. It also can provide you with the competitive edge for continuing on to graduate studies or applying for a full-time position once you graduate.

The Problem Solvers: Education and Career Paths of Engineers with Disabilities

Convened by AAAS in December 2009, the Problem Solvers workshop was a “first of its kind” meeting to capture the strategies that have enabled people with disabilities to pursue study and succeed as engineers. The goal of the workshop was to understand how best to create a cadre of engineers and scientists whose disabilities serve to enhance rather than limit their potential and contributions to society. This report summarizes the meeting.

New Career Paths for Students with Disabilities

Although the nation has made important progress in helping students with disabilities reach their fullest potential, much more remains to be done at the pre-college and post-secondary education levels – and beyond those into competitive employment.  For those students who choose to pursue STEM fields, quality education can lead to promising technical careers.  AAAS suggest that future disability legislation, policies and initiative focus on five key areas.
