2016 Annual Meeting Communicating Science Seminar

Approximately 300 scientists and science communicators (and more via Twitter) participated in the fourth annual seminar in Washington, D.C., in 2016. Archived videos of the 2016 seminar are below.

 

The first of the three panels, Scientists Engaging in Policy, launched an examination of science policymaking and the role of scientists. Panelists included Jim Gates, of the University of Maryland, Arthur Lupia, of the University of Michigan, and Carrie Wolinetz, of the National Institutes of Health and Erin Heath, of AAAS , moderated the panel. This panel was co-organized with the ESEP program (Engineers and Scientists Engaging in Policy) and workshop.

 

The Communicating Synthetic Biology panel, moderated by Andrew Maynard of Arizona State University, delved into the challenges posed by synthetic biology and other quickly-emerging technologies. Speakers included Kristala Jones Prather, of MIT, Natalie Kuldell, of MIT and BioBuilder, Gretchen Gano of the University of California, Berkeley, and Building with Biology, and Dietram Scheufele of the University of Wisconsin.

 

The third and final panel, Using Visuals for Science Communication, considered guiding principles for creating effective science visuals. Speakers included Alberto Cuadra, of AAAS/Science, Matt Hansen, of the University of Maryland and Laura Rickard, of the University of Maine. Bonnie Berkowitz, of The Washington Post, moderated the discussion.
