Who's Your Audience | AAAS

The first of the three panels, Who's Your Audience, focused on how scientists can more effectively work with public audiences to provide science communication experiences that are mutually productive and beneficial. Speakers included Kirstin Dow, of the University of South Carolina, Kishore Hari, of the University of California San Francisco, and Matt Leighninger, of Public Agenda. Bruce Lewenstein, of Cornell University, moderated.

Scientist Motivations, Support, and Challenges for Public Engagement | AAAS

The second panel, Scientist Motivations, Support, and Challenges for Public Engagement, shared practical models of organizations that have implemented policies or practices to enable scientists’ participation in various forms of engagement. Speakers included Tracey Holloway, of the Center for Sustainability and the Global Environment at the University of Wisconsin, Ezra Markowitz, of the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and Sriram Sundararajan, of Iowa State University. Jessica Sickler, of J. Sickler Consulting, LLC, moderated.

The final panel, The Online Scientist: Social Media and Public Engagement, discussed how scientists and communicators can design and implement effective public engagement plans that incorporate social media. Speakers included Raychelle Burks, of St. Edward’s University, Sara Yeo, of the University of Utah, and Nsikan Akpan, of PBS NewsHour. Erika Shugart, of the American Society for Cell Biology, moderated.
