Current Issue: September 2018
Welcome to the September 2018 issue of SB&F! With this issue, we are pleased to announce the longlist for the 2019 AAAS/Subaru SB&F Prize for Excellence in Science Books! You can see this list starting on page 334.
As the days start to get shorter and cooler, we can’t help but turn our thoughts to the fall season. It’s one of our favorite times of the year—not only because of the cooler weather but also because of the changing colors of the leaves, the wonderful golden light cast by the sun due to the changing tilt of the Earth, and all the fall festivals that take place.
To help celebrate this time of year, SB&F’s Read-Around-A-Theme focuses on the fall harvest with a selection of books and websites that can help you learn more about farms, farm animals, insects like bees that help to pollinate our food, and the many ways that people have developed to grow the food we eat. (See p. 342.)
Also coming up in September is Banned Books Week, celebrated this year the week of September 23 – 29. This week is an annual event that celebrates the freedom to read by highlighting the value of free and open access to information. For our look at this celebration, we highlight science books that have been banned in the past starting on page 339.
Be sure to also go through our reviews and check out what exciting science shows are coming up on TV! One show in particular that you might want to check out is Neanderthals, airing October 17 and 24 on PBS. Join Andy Serkis and Ella Al-Shamahi to learn more about ancient Neanderthals, whose genes helped shape modern humans and continue to affect us.
