Numerous well-established and long term institutional programs exist which are of interest to the geospatial technologies and human rights community. A sample of these are presented here, and AAAS welcomes suggestions for additions. Please email us with your suggestion and include a link to the program and a brief description of its relevance to geospatial technologies and human rights. Note that Institutional Programs also often host Projects of relevance, and many of the programs mentioned below are linked to samples of their respective projects.
AAAS Science and Human Rights Program
The AAAS Science and Human Rights Program (SHRP) works with scientists to “advance science and serve society” through human rights. The Program carries out its mission by engaging individual scientists and scientific associations in human rights efforts; applying scientific tools and technologies to enhance human rights work; bringing human rights standards to the conduct of science; and promoting the human right to enjoy the benefits of scientific progress.
Digital Democracy
Advances in mobile and internet technologies are reshaping societies around the world. Every day these technologies become cheaper, simpler and more reliable. Digital Democracy (Dd) develops information and communication tools to address the needs of the vulnerable and disempowered communities where we work. Famine Early Warning System Network (FEWS Net)
FEWS Net is a USAID-funded collaboration of international, national and regional partners that works to strengthen the abilities of African countries and regional organizations to manage the risk of food insecurity through the provision of timely and analytical early warning and vulnerability information. The organizations make contributions to the field of mapping and human rights through their work on food security monitoring and analysis, which utilizes satellite data and geospatial technologies. Much of the data used by FEWS Net is disseminated through their public-domain web portal.
GISCorps
GISCorps coordinates short term, volunteer based GIS services to underprivileged communities around the world. Past projects have supported humanitarian relief, environmental analysis, and K-12 education.
GIS Development
Is an India-based organization with a strong presence in the GIS for development community. The organization hosts a web information portal that includes a plethora of information and resources on GIS technologies and applications. GIS Development also has a number of publications, hosts conferences around the globe, and focuses on training in India.
GSDI Association
The Global Spatial Data Infrastructure (GSDI) Association serve as a point of contact and effective voice for those in the global community involved in developing, implementing and advancing spatial data infrastructure concepts; fosters spatial data infrastructures that support sustainable social, economic, and environmental systems integrated from local to global scales; and promotes the informed and responsible use of geographic information and spatial technologies for the benefit of society. HURIDOCS is a global capacity-building network of organisations that use documentation techniques, monitoring methods, information management systems and technologies in the defense of human rights and the prevention of abuses.
iMMAP

Indigenous Mapping Network
The Indigenous Mapping Network’s (IMN) mission is to empower native communities by connecting them with the tools they need to protect, preserve, and enhance their way of life within their aboriginal territories. IMN is a conduit for native individuals and groups to meet and build relationships, and assist one another in accomplishing sovereignty goals. IMN endeavors to bridge the gap between traditional “mapping” practices and modern mapping technologies.
ISFEREA – Geo-Spatial Information Analysis for Global Security and Stability
As part of the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre, ISFEREA conducts scholarly research on conflict monitoring, image information mining, disaster risk assessment, and population estimation, among other areas.
