Update on NSF political science research

On June 7 the National Science Foundation issued a guidance memo detailing how it would implement a provision in its FY2013 appropriations bill that restricts the awarding of political science grants to those that contribute to national security or economic interests.  The NSF guidance memo states that it "will continue to engage panels to review grant proposals, using the two National Science Board-approved merit review criteria (Intellectual Merit and Broader Impacts)" and will also ask review panels to "provide input on whether proposals meet one or both of the additional criteria... promoting national security or the economic interests of the United States."  According to ScienceInsider, the agency may also consider establishing new review panels to consider these two new criteria.
